View Full Version : Update on the bed build...It is FINISHED!

Finally, the bed is finished! It is set up and made up! A few reminders - This is a copy of a mahogany bed my uncle made in 1974 for my mom and dad. His were Honduran Mahogany, this one is African Mahogany (There IS a difference). The finish is the same as his, but some differences in application, etc. The finish is walnut-stained grain filler, orange shellac, and then lacquer. The hand-carved pineapple finials were measured from my uncle's. His had been carved in 1958 and then stuck in a drawer and forgotten until he remembered them in time to put them on my mom and dad's bed. They are glued in place on 1" long tenons.

Thanks for all the comments! Other's welcome as are any questions. Enjoy!

Very Nice!! I made two single beds from a very similar pattern back in the 70 for my daughters. They were from Cherry. I can't guess what a 4 x 4 post of clear Cherry would cost today.
I like your finials, very nice.

Very nice. Like to see a little flatwork combined with spinny. I don't feel so bad now wanting to make some Shaker ladderback chairs.

Great job of form and function. There is nothing more gratifying than turning something that you know will be used every day and into the next generation as well. Great family heirloom.

Steve,
I have been watching this build the whole way. It almost makes me wish I still did furniture until my hips, back and neck start hurting. A great project and well executed too. I love the Pineapple post tops as well. Very quality work. Great design and the finish looks great as well.

Thanks everyone! Your comments are appreciated so much.:)

Looks like I'll being do some flatwork in my future to come up with a matching chest of drawers of some kind. I'll probably copy another piece my uncle made for my mama. That's not a bad thing...my wife is really wanting a matching chest of drawers now so what I gotta do is figure out what tools I *really* need to do that!:D :p

Before I get to that though, I've got plans for a pulpit/speaker's podium that I'm gonna build for the church using wood from the old pews we had to get rid of. That wood looks just like honduras mahogany (they were originally placed in the church back in the mid-60's) but I really think it's another species altogether. It will have 4 turned legs, so we'll see how that will go. Plus a few odds and ends bowls/HF's I gotta do.

Thanks again for the comments, and thanks for all the inspiration all of you provide. You rock! Every last one of you!:)
