I use mineral oil, food safe of course, for my salad bowls and am wondering about buying bulk quantities of the stuff. there is a soapstone supplier who sells it for their counter tops but it is a bit pricey imo. can any point me to a supplier? or what i might google to find who produces it?
silly question to be sure but i need some help

Allen- I used to use quantities of mineral oil for items I made like cutting boards, and having been in the horse industry for many years, found the best source to be your local veterinarian. It is widely used as an intestinal lubricant for treating such ailments as colicky horses and cows, etc, and vets around here buy it in 50 gal. drums. Rather than paying $1 per oz. at the pharmacy, I pay the vet about $12 per gal. of FDA food grade mineral oil when I bring my own jug.

"...around here buy it in 50 gal. drums..."

That oughta be enough to loosen things up a bit....

I prefer walnut oil as it actually cures and hardens which mineral oil never does. Look up Mike Mahoney, http://www.bowlmakerinc.com/ I know he sells at least gallons of it, and also,

http://www.doctorswoodshop.com/ (http://www.doctorswoodshop.com/) for another type of walnut oil. I don't know if he sells bulk or not. He does have other walnut oil products.

I think both of these walnut oil products have been polymerized (heated) to help it hardened. My experience with grocery store walnut oil resulted in a rancid bowl. I only use the polymerized oil now.

You would have to ask the Doc about it as he is a chemist. I know both his and Mike's oils have been heated, which is supposed to break down the proteins that cause the allergic reactions. Some of the grocery store walnuts are pasteurized for the same reason. I used the grocery store stuff for years and never had any problems.
