Need to change the chuck on my drill press. It's kinda old and the chuck is kinda gnarley and the chuck key doesn't fit properly and it doesn't turn very easily etc etc.

Real question is, how do I identify the morse taper ie #1 or #2? I don't think I have anything big enough to test, its a 16mm (5/8"+) chuck which i'm hoping to replace with a 5/8". The only thing I know my MT# on is my lathe and I don't think the chuck will fit in that and I don't think my lathe center will even touch the sides of the drill quill.

Any ideas??

Thanks

John

If no body has mentioned it, welcome to The Creek! Having said that, I've got a real simplistic approach to your situation. Get a #1 & #2, and return the one that doesn't match up with the taper you're replacing.

John, here is a link to Morse taper specs that may help you.

John, more than likely, it’s a #2 in your DP. Bryans link should answer your question. My metal working lathe has a 5/8” Jacobs chuck that uses a #4 MT in the tailstock, so you can't always go by the chuck size.
