finnishing a cane seat chair

can you put a finnish over a cane seat in a chair prewoven type if it maters i finnished the wood first but just wondering if some finnish over the cane itself would be good ? or bad ? if yes what would be good poly ?or one of the many wipe on oils or ?im thinking of trying to make it more stain resistant
