I did these today from dogwood. The largest is about 8.5" long and the other two are 20% and 40% smaller so I would have a set. I got the idea for this design from an article on scoops in issue #230 of the British magazine Woodturning. I thought it was a more elegant design than the ones Richard Raffan makes. The hardest part was using a coping saw to cut away a portion of each.

Nice set, never seen them done this way, but I like it. Good wood choice being fairly tight grain.

Pretty nice. I have not seen them made this way either. It looks like you could almost turn a mallet, hollow it out, and cut off the top.

Good looking scoops there. Any chance of a close up of the detail on the end of the handle? Those will make a set of kitchen canisters really happy. I suggest using the big one for the sugar!

Really cool Mike! Could you bandsaw it rather that using a coping saw?

Mike,
Those are sweet. They look functional , but also have style. Well Done.

Nice looking scoops Mike! I have made a few and had good luck using my bandsaw by using the handle to pull it into the cut instead of the normal pushing the wood into the blade.

The scoops look great and they should provide many years of service. Dogwood is one of the few woods that work hardens.

Thanks for all of the kind comments.
Jon, the end of the handle has some beads and then is sanded to a flat on my Rigid OSS so you will be able to easily drill a hole.
Jim and Steve, I have used the bandsaw on the Raffan style but it makes me nervous. I had one snatched out of my hands and shatter so I tend to avoid that. Also, I keep a 3 tpi woodturners blade mounted which is pretty aggressive. They look nicer now that I have applied a coat of Mahoney walnut oil to them.

I use to teach a class at Woodcraft on making this style of scoop. Seams that everyone loves this style and you did an excellent job on these. I'm
with you on the cooping saw instead of the band saw, I tried it once and resided that people should use cooping saws.

Really nice set Mike. I have made a few using a bandsaw.
