Sure had a good time Saturday morning. I finished the work on the El Camino I started on Thursday of last week, so Saturday morning was set aside for a trip to Mike Mastin's Curly Woods in Mc Kinney, TX. Mike has a yearly garage sale and this year I was there. Second one there as a matter of fact.

I immediately spotted the big stack of Walnut on the way in (I'll post pics later) and decided that part of this new project would entail a big piece of that.

I then went looking for some Quilted Maple and found a small section in the sale bin. This will be the center of the tabletop. I am making a small end table for the chaise chair we have in the living room. Anyway, the first border around the Maple will be Bloodwood....got a 1" x 36" x 8" slice for that. Then the outer edges and legs will be Walnut. The Walnut has some sapwood meandering along the edges...that oughta make things interesting.

Had a great time walking through Mike's shop looking at all the beautiful wood he has. Undoubtedly a very nice assortment of stock to choose from and some very good prices to boot.

The wife is getting a new end table...might just make it a chess board as well since I have been wanting to build one. :D
Here's some pics of what I got....

I have visited with Mike from Curly Woods on a number of occasions and he is super nice and helpful. A really good guy and goes out of his way to help. I wish I lived closer. I would love to see his operation and see all of the beautiful woods. A candy store for woodworkers I bet. Definetly though keep us posted on those projects they sound awesome and I look forward to seeing pic's of em.

I've been to Mike's place and it's a wonderful "candy store"!! I'd be a regular visitor if I didn't live 1300 miles away... http://www.thewoodworkers.us/phpBB2/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif You couldn't ask for a nicer guy to do business with, too.

Looks like good stuff Kelly.Mike stopped by my shop yesterday. I'd say it was a good thing you got there early. He said it was really busy all day. Good for Mike.

Still need to take pics, but I went down early to beat the rush. Of course, the prices were a bit higher than the garage sale, but still good in my book. I left with a tad under 200 bdft of Birdseye Maple. I'd probably had boughten more, but by the time I left it was well after closing time and he had many hours to go.

I thought he had a nice stash. I know he woul dlike to have some more on some of the species, but in all a good selection.

BTW, just a nice 8 hour drive one way.

He also was working on hooking up a huge new planer.

Kelly,

I think I recognize that walnut. Looks like air dried St. Louis grown stuff to me. ;)

It was great to finally meet you! I hope that you did not feel pressured to leave on Friday. We were there for at least another 2 hours after you left.
The sale was chaos at its best Saturday morning. Really was fun though too as we got to see many people that had to travel from long distances.

I am almost finished wiring up the new planer. Then I will start plumbing in the tools, in their new locations, to the new DC system (Oneida 7.5 HP cyclone system). This DC is a cat snatcher for sure !

Nah,

I knew I had a long night in store for me driving back. If not for the drive, I could have stayed for hours. Heck, probably best that I left or my wallet would have been even thinner :).

Steve,

Mike asked about you on Saturday. My little chunk of QBL Maple needs a run through a real jointer and a planer...mind if I stop by in the next couple of days?

Not at all Kelly, but I still need to get the planer wired up legal (I tried to finish all the wiring last night). I am having a bit of difficulty getting a hole drilled in the concrete floor to anchor my upright support for the conduit that I have dropped down to the planer. My hammer drill wore out a new Bosch bit and I only got about 3/4" into the concrete! Not sure what obstruction I am hitting (rebar maybe???) I have never had this kind of problem before drilling a hole in concrete to sink a RedHead before.

Once everything is running, I would more than happy to pass it thru the machines for you. Give me a call tomorrow and I will let you know how it is coming. I need the planer working ASAP and we just got another shipment of lumber in yesterday.

no problem Kelly. I'll be here. As always best to call first.
Mike sounds pretty cool. I think it should work.
