I have been working on this small entertainment center to fit an odd-ball sized TV (who ever heard of a table top rear projection???). It is made of dyed black ash solids and ash veneer over MDF core with maple secondaries. One of the nice things about dying it black was it made selecing the wood easier. No need to match for color. In fact, I found some of the ugly streaky wood had the straightest grain - which was perfect for this project. Both outside end caps and the door are bookmatched flat panels. The drawer/door pulls are from Lee Valley. The 4 drawers are on Accuride 100# full extension slides and the door is hinged with Blums.

One of my other hobbies is Home Theather (this is not my TV - for the record ). I can certainly see doing more black ash projects in the future. Besides, when was the last time you could use a Sharpie for touch-up??
Thanks for looking. Lars

I'm a newbie to woodworking. Could you please explain "dyed it black." How?

Looks very slick - I like your choice of hardware too. Great job.

Paul, it was dyed with this product ... http://minwax.com/products/woodstain/waterbased.cfm.
It was very easy to apply.

"Massive" comes to mind!! Nice job on that EC, Lars!! I agree that the dyed ash looks great...it's one of those woods that take to coloration like that very nicely as there is still texture to add interest.

great looking center. The black came out real good. I have tried to get that color before and not had it turn out as well.. What exact color did you use ?

Lars....beautiful results! Question? What did you use for a dye? My first project when I finish my new shop is a matched pair of display cabinets for my daughter. She wants them to be black. Also, what did you use for a finish over the dye?

Ken and Lou, the black dye is Minwax's water based Onyx dye. It's finished with General Finish's Arm-R-Seal in semi-gloss. This picture is not that great, but it really did turn out BLACK.

This is the finish:
