I found this planer and sharpener available on CL while searching for the sharpener. It is a Jet JWP-15H 15" planer. Given the sharpener is worth $150-200 and I have a perfectly good 12.5" planer. What are your thoughts on the planer? Is it worth $600?

If you were going to pay $200 for the sharpener anyway, then $400 doesn't seem out of line for an older Taiwanese 15" stationary planer. I don't know what they used for primer (if anything) back in the '80s, but the paint always seems to be peeling off of cast iron parts from older Taiwanese machines. It doesn't affect performance, just looks bad.

Keep in mind that bearings and belts might need replacement. Older planers seem to use identical parts, so you can probably source whatever you need from Grizzly. Parts are generally pretty cheap. Make sure to change the gear box oil as well.

The planer is $600 and the sharpener $200. The lot is $800. So does $600 work for "an older Taiwanese 15" stationary planer". Unless you guys can change my mind, I'm thinking 'no'. A) because my Delta lunchbox does a really good job and I have a ton of blades in the drawer, and B) because it is "an older Taiwanese 15" stationary planer". My gut feeling is that jet has made better planers.

I've got a much newer white colored jet planer- used only a few times before I bought it, 500 dollars off of fleabay. The sharpener is super slow unless you get a coarse wheel.

You're right--$600 is too much for the planer. It isn't that much more for a new one from Grizzly.

I'm looking for something to sharpen the knives (jointer/planer). I liked the Makita better than the Tormek and Jet. It seems "more designed for them".

I hadn't even checked that. :(

Remember when buying used Asian that the old Taiwanese machines were more like the Chinese ones of today. The quality from Taiwan started out pretty bad and improved over the years to OK. Dave
