There is a plugin for SketchUp that will unfold 3d shapes. It think it is called "Flattery".

I'm still trying to figure out why you think I somehow have a big head!

You can do this with Solidworks with surfaces, you can then flatten it out using the sheetmetal functions. I would assume you could also do it in Inventor, Pro-engineer, Catia and maybe even with Rhino.

Frank,

With all the "stuff" you know, all the things you have contributed, all you have explained to us over the years......

By the way, just exactly how do you get your head through the doorways??:D:D

My latest newsletter from Foster Coburn at Graphics Unleashed advises of free download offers which do what you want. I believe the Hexagon 2.5 is the one that'll work for you. https://www.daz3d.com/i/3d-models/all-products-promotions?cat=1068#1,cat_1068_382|f_orig

Here's a 2 minute example with a color fill.

Thanks Mike......not sure I want to spend hundreds of hours learning how to use a 3D modeling program though. The video link didn't work.....can you repost that please?

Rhino has a few different tools for developing 2d surfaces for complex forms.

Squish (http://wiki.mcneel.com/labs/advancedflattening)

Smash

Unroll Developable Surface (http://www.rhino3.de/design/modeling/developable/)

Here is an example of an unrolled surface.
