I was recently contacted by a young man who was interested it getting started with turning, but didn't have a lathe yet and just wanted to talk about the Vortex.

We chatted by email on and off for a few weeks and yesterday he wrote that he finally had a lathe. Originally I had said that I had a bunch of Cherry recently cut and would be happy to share some with him. He really wanted to begin by practicing with some green wood.

I spent an hour or so in my shop today cutting up what I had. Here is a shot of the pieces I prepared and the resultant pile of shavings.

Ahhhh, Cherry, one of my favorites. I am sure he will enjoy making curlies out of those. BTW if the newbie decides he doesn't want it, just ship it to me and I will keep it out of your way.:D:rolleyes:

Thanks James, I'll be sure to keep that in mind. Here in BC there is sooooo much Cherry available that it is actually pretty hard to get rid of it . . . .

He is going to be starting off with Cherry? Wow! Makes me wonder what lathe he is going to be starting off with as well! Sure is some great looking wood and 'good on you' for sharing with a newby!

Hi all.
Here's the photo he sent me of his set-up.
Looks as if he may have to add some weight but should work as a good starter for someone on a VERY tight budget.

That lathe and wood should make some nice curls (with sharp tools). I hope your new friend has someone to help to help him with sharpening also. Good green wood really helps get one started turning bowls.
