This piece of curly Maple is the other half of the blank that was used to create Broken Hearted (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?181334-Broken-Hearted-a-HF), a deep red form I posted last week. Like that piece, this one was also cracked when I got it but I loved the unique curl in it and just had to turn something!

Curly Maple, 6 3/8” diameter x 4 7/8” high x 1/8” thick or a little less, dyed with multiple coats of Royal Blue powdered RIT and green TransTint in an attempt to capture some of the colors of the tropics. Can you tell I am getting tired of looking at snow?? This piece has multiple coats of gloss wipe-on poly and will be given a coat of Renaissance wax once the finish has cured.

Another beauty, Steve! I think I actually like this a little better than the red one....

Your dye schedule produced some really neat undertones - much different than I envisioned from our discussions!! I like it! And, in comparison, I think I favor this one over the red one. Great form, as is always the case with your SW forms.

Glad John used the word I was looking for, 'undertones' as this is a neat feature on this piece. I like green, but also liked the red in Broken Hearted. As true as this may be to SW forms, I like the softer shoulder on Broken Hearted over this one, but I like this one as well...just a degree or so difference, I guess. Overall, I like the coloring on this piece more so than than on the red...but I like green!
Would like seeing a composite of both of these.

Perfect piece for St. Paddy's day coming up. The greens are subtle and the browns give off a cast of light gold radiance. Really cool effect. Maybe name it the "Leprechaun's pot of gold".

Classic SS form...and that ain't easy! I guess I'm looking for more "Bam!" in the coloring...or maybe conventional wisdom says I shouldn't? To me...this form and shape begs for more dimension...I think I'm losing it in the pics...having seen these up close, I'm looking closer.

When I was a kid, we had a family friend named George. He was a real kibitzer. My dad's nickname was Cris and George would always look at his latest work and say "May I say, Cris baby... you've done it again."

So I am going to borrow that and say, "May I say, Steve baby... you have done it again!

Great variation in the color Steve. I can almost see the coral reef under that shimmering sea.;):)

Beautiful piece Steve. Love the form and the color looks like the water off North Carolina coast.

Been away from the computer all day - which is very nice for a change... but wanted to jump on here and thank everyone for their comments! I realize that not every form, color or wood is going to appeal to everyone, so for those folks taking the time to comment... it means a lot! Thank you!

Steve, I too think that the form is great, but to me something is missing. I'm going to suggest that you try doing one with more of a raised rim. I'll even go further and suggest accentuating the rim with some grooves...3 is a good number. The rim on this one is a little higher than you might want but you get the idea.
