What's the optimum wall thickness for large functional salad bowls?

I like anything 3/8" and over Frank...no reason, just what looks good to me.

I'm with Jim on this. 3/8" more or less depending on the size of the salad bowl. Getting thinner is o.k. I guess, but I like a little thicker to give me more opitons on the rim design, and I think a salad bowl needs a little heft.

+1 for 3/8". If it is a really large bowl, I might go just a tad over, but never all the way to 1/2". For anything under 18", I'm at 3/8" - probably closer to 5/16". 1/4" seems a little light to me usually.

My preference is to have a thicker rim to provide some holding ability and strength, and then turn the sides down closer to 1/4". I do that by undercutting the thicker rim section and flaring out the outside. That also give some top edge to show the wood and not just a flat rim edge.

I do like Thomas does. I like a thicker rim at 3/8" but will slightly undercut to about a 1/4".

I liike my salad bowls to be heavy..i do not want to chase them all over the table as I try to get the salad on the fork..so I make mine 3/8- 1/2 and even more if the bowl is larger.

1/4 inch is a bit thin. Up to about 1/2 inch for more light weight woods, but most in the 3/8 inch range, though I never measure exact thickness.
