Having stumbled upon some 8/4 Birch for a bargain two bucks a foot, I was going to make a new workbench top. So, face grain up or edge grain up? I've seen it done both ways. I'm leaning toward edge grain, but I know I'd get a better yield if I went face grain. The boards aren't particularly wide (4.5-6"), and are every bit of 2" thick after jointing. In either case, I was going to breadboard the ends. Is the difference between radial and tangental expansion the culprit here? The benchtop will be 2' wide, if this helps.

From what I have read, you would still want edge grain up. The boards will stay flatter if they are all glued face to face with the edges as the workbench top.
