Hi.

Does anyone know what companies make checkering tools to checker gunstocks?

Thanks,

Brownells.com is the worlds largest supplier of gunsmithing tools. Ask for one of their catalogs, thet have lots of fun things.:)

There's two basic systems for checkering tools with interchangable cutters...both work well...you just have to pick one. I'd recommend 60 degree cutters and 16 lines to the inch to start. Crawl before you walk, eh?

I also strongly recommend a Monty Kennedy Jointer tool from Brownells to scribe your index lines and straighten out any mistakes.

The decal overlays look like they'd work great but frankly, most are too large for the styles of checkering I like so I do my layouts from scratch. See if your art store has chartpack tape....a hard, thick plastic tape that makes a good "fence". And save scraps of thick plastic like from Chlorox bottles or slightly thicker to make yourself a straightedge that bends around wrists without losing it's straight edge.

Do all your tool handles before tackling that expensive gunstock.
