I had an old short piece of reclaimed Long leaf Pine, an old floor joist. It was too big for my little Delta Milwaukee to turn between centers. I took my lathe to work to help out sanding some turned legs they were doing a few months ago. We have a nice Powermatic outboard stand there. I'll keep my lathe at work since I don't have a shop right now. Outboard is a little different feel.
I forgot to count the rings before I started, but I count about 45 rings in the center.
12 3/4" dia. x 1 3/4" tall. oil finish.

That's pretty cool Deane. I think it being a little off center enhances the "composition", adds a bit of interest. Glad you are able to use your lathe at work until you have a new shop.

Really cool piece and well done. I like the off-center look. Like Dan I think it really stands out.

Great looking bowl. Although the grain is off center, it appears off center in a balanced way. Don't know if that makes sense but I sure like it Deane!

Man - that is cool looking! I was thinking the same as Jim - looks like a resin casting. Great grain and color!

WOW Deane, that is one bad a$$ platter my friend. You had to be grinning from ear to ear as that beautiful grain started to show itself. Absolutely gorgeous.

Lots of people have said it already, but that grain is really something! Getting the finish cut right through that winter growth was either brilliance or providence!

Thanks for the positive comments. The wood was the star on this one. I new it was going to be interesting before I started because of the tight grain and the dark rings. The challenge was deciding when to stop turning on the inside. The grain pattern moved with every cut. I'm about out of interesting wood so it's back to working on form for a while.

I am really happy that you went with a minimalist design on this and let the wood do the talking. Simply gorgeous.

Very cool, I like how the grain takes on a different character all around that piece. Well done!
