This black walnut NE is 15.5" long, not sure about the height. The finish is Minwax WOP . The insurance lady came to my house last week and ended up buying it. 223284

Nice bowl! lLooks to be very smooth. I have trouble sometimes getting my ne bowls sanded smoothly.

Me too, Thomas. You guys sure do good work with these things. My trouble is on the inside/end grain. I've nearly given up on natural edge bowls like this. Fred, you've done beautiful work here. It really is a nice looking bowl.

Nice job, Fred. The form and thickness are just like I like it, as if that really matters.

Did you apply WOP to the bark?

Did you apply WOP to the bark?

On the first coat of WOP I soak everything and let it set a few minutes then wipe it down. Let it set for a few days to cure. Walnut will soak up a lot of WOP.

Thanks everyone for the replies.:)

Nice work, Fred. You managed to keep all the bark. Not so easy!

Fred you did a fine job on that bowl. I have some irritation when I turn black walnut, but it sure is pretty when it is finished.

Very nice NE bowl Fred. Is that a recess on the bottom, or just looks that way from the photo?

I love it.

Very cool form, well executed. The wood is also reallly cool. I love the small even band of sapwood.

Nice.

Very nice NE piece Fred, I like it as well. I like the weight of it, appropriate for piece that large.
Like Baxter said...I hope you got more than a buck for it!;) Wonderful finish, sounds like you're more patient than I am to let poly cure out on walnut...I probably need to learn some better habits and not put on too heavy, and expect it to be dry the following day, get frustrated and wipe it all off with naptha and resort to an oil finish instead. Sometimes, the poly is just the right way to go!

That's beautiful Fred. I've made a few but I had trouble trying to get them smooth too.
