I had a 10" dry chunk of walnut and decided I would try a larger bowl. I had several issues come up. I found that I couldn't mount a 10" blank on a 10" lathe. I had to trim it to get it on. I caught a snag on the inside and the pine glue block broke in half. I glued the broken block back together and it was out of balance and I caught another snag that tore it inhalf again. removed it and glued on an ash block. Out of balance again. by the time i got in back round and the 2 snags cleared the wall thickness was down to 1/8". I felt lucky to get this one out alive. 9 1/2" dia. X 4" deep. Top 1/2 has 1/8" wall, bottom 1/4". Oil finish.

Well despite all the excitement I think it looks great. You get an atta boy for hanging in there!

Winston Churchill said (I think it was him) to a graduating class, "Never give up. Never give up. Never, ever give up." That was his speech. You never gave up and it paid off big time! Love it and glad it - and you - survived!

Very nice Deane;
your tenacity is impressive. I would recommend a hardwood glue block on future projects. Nicely done.

Deane,

It looks like you are learning how to work without a chuck and remove the glue block for a rounded look bottom. The inside and outside form of the bowl look really good with no visable flat spots and good curve top to bottom. Getting a 9 1/2" bowl off a 10" lathe is doing pretty good. Poplar works pretty well for glue blocks, and is a big step up from pine, expecially white pine.

For all the troubles Deane that sure turned out to be a pretty bowl.

Deane, fabulous piece. I have always had trouble finishing Walnut, but it seems you have it down. Great form also, I like how thin it is,,, nice...
