Nice work on a pretty tall piece. I am not an orange fan in particular but it matches the grain very well on this one. Is that grain only brought out by the varnish?

Thanks Baxter. To answer your question No. I filled the grain with a high grade Artist Acrylic paint.

hickory isn't a wood most folks seem to turn, yet I've always used it. WOW, hollowing 16 inches! Super!

Thanks for looking Michelle. I turn a lot of hickory it may not be as easy to turn as some other woods but it's one of my favorite woods.

Joe,
16-1/2" deep, Wow. That is mining way down there.... Do you use a light attached to your hollowing rig when you hollow that deep? The piece is very nice and the color is striking and seems to flow well into the form. Nice Work.

Hey Joe, what system do you use to hollow that deep?

Thanks Ken. No I don't use a light. There's really nothing to look at on the inside while turning. I do use a laser on the outside.

Hey Joe, what system do you use to hollow that deep?

Peter I use a boring system from Advanced lathe Tools. It's available from The sanding Glove.
I have hollowed pieces up to 32" deep with this system with a Rolly Munro cutter in it.

Nice. I'm trying to figure out what is going on with the figure at the bottom. It almost looks like a graft line.

Thanks for looking David. If your talking about the painted area at the bottom, I just tried to pick a natural grain line around the piece and highlight it with a little color. It does go up & down as it goes around the piece.
