Hey folks,

One of the vendors at the IAP penmaker's forum has sponsored a kitless penmaking competition for 4 penmaking "rookies" who have been making pens for less than 2 years, but have already delved into advanced techniques. It would be great to have some more votes from woodworkers and craftsmen, so I'm posting about it here.

All entrants were given the same material (except for one, who was accidentally given a darker version of the same lucite), clip, and nib, and were challenged to come up with their own designs.

The voting is (unfortunately for some) being held on Facebook, and here is the link to vote:

You don't need to "like" the page or anything, but you do need to be a member of Facebook to vote.

And here are photos of the entries:

What is "kitless" pen making?

It's making a pen essentially from scratch.... with the exception of perhaps clips, springs, nibs, and ink. Threaded connections may be cut by hand with taps and dies, or alternatively on a metal lathe.

In contrast, there are a variety of pen kits available from woodturning supply companies, in which the penturner creates 1 or 2 barrels (depending on the kit style) that are drilled out to accept a brass tube. The fittings, sections, and threaded connections are all included with the kit and are pressed into the brass tubes.
