These box elder bowl were a little punky (soft spots absorb dye better than the sound areas), but pretty common looking. The wood was easy to turn and sands very easily. The first was dyed with Behlan's Red Mahogany, the second was medium walnut. After sanding them back, I used Transtint yellow over the red and brown under color. The brown one is a little more subtle, but the red and yellow made a great contrast. I am getting better at power sanding them back on the lathe which beats the heck out of doing all that hand sanding. Both are finished with pre-cat lacquer. The red is about 7" across and 5" deep and the brown one is close to 9" across and 5" deep.

Nice and thin! Bob, I like both, but the form of the brown suits me better and the color combo of the red better. Sounds like you enjoyed working on them. I rarely enjoy punky wood, but sometimes it can be so easy to sand out.

Cool looking bowls Bob! Amazing what a little color can do!
