My second Wave Bowl, the first one sold at a charity auction for around $1000, so I decided to make another. I like this one better. Sycamore, pierced and airbrushed. Around 8" (20cm) across. EM6000 Waterborne Lacquer finish.

The piercing looks awesome. I don't know if I would have the patience for that. How long did it take?

Very nice work Eric!! The sycamore looks great. Thats a good sized bowl. Looks a little thicker than most of the pierced ones I have seen

Nice form and great work on the piercing! Congrats on the successful auction - good PR for you. You have WAY more patience than do I.

Thanks everyone. This piercing took quite a while because, as Baxter noticed, this piece is rather thick for piercing. It is probably approaching the limit of what you can pierce with one of the air powered rotary tools, it is a little over 1/8" (3mm) thick. For a piece this thick, you have to go slowly and make multiple passes around each pierce. A wall thickness of 3/32" (2mm) is much easier.

The piercing was spread out over several sessions, so it is hard to estimate how long it took, but I would guess over a dozen hours.

I don't think this sort of thing really takes patience at all. An analogy I gave often to the crowd at The Woodworking Show watching me make the Yin-Yang piercing was:

"If you are a baseball fan, going to the stadium and watching a ball game takes no patience at all, if you are not a baseball fan, it takes a heck of a lot of patience. So if you enjoy making these sort of pieces, it takes no patience at all."

Awesome, Eric. I'm not sure that I have that much patience.

I don't know how well it's going to hold cereal though... ;)

Great piece. Add me to the not patient enough crowd, although I like the analogy. I don't have patience for baseball.
