I've been wanting to do this carve for a while now- it is a .75 deep carve in 1.0 thick 10x10 inch Mesquite and is a bas relief of the betrayal of Jesus. The finish is one that I have become familliar with for mesquite carvings-- I put on a wash coat of 1# shellac and very quickly, before the shellac can dry I smear light brown briwax wax all over the carving. I let this sit for about 15 minutes and then buff the entire piece with a buffing wheel, which leaves the set wax in some of the carvings. I then cover the whole thing in an oil/poly wipe on coat and buff this off after about an hour. This leaves a pleasing (to me) non-reflective glow to the mesquite. The carving was done with my Carvewright.

At any rate, thanks for looking and any comments are always appreciated.

Excellent! Your finish process really makes it look like it has been around for a century or two.

That is pretty cool - really like the whole look of the piece.

Absolutely superb. Your finish technique really adds a warmth to the wood. Such a tragic story it tells though. Well done.
