Was dying fiddled maple this week This one is a Rocklar blank about 7" across and 2" deep. It was first dyed with a dark red (black added to the red), sanded back and dyed with bright red. Followed by 4 coats of cat lacquer. The rim and foot were beaded with a 3/8th. spindle gouge The lip is under cut using a 1/2" spindle gouge sharpen like a bowl gouge, using a pull cut with the handle held down about 45 degrees. That works better than trying to use a push cut and catching the left wing on a gouge. Sanded to 600 grit.

The dye on this and the green one really make that figure pop! I also like the very clean detailing on this one...

That is a beautiful bowl and an awesome dye job. I picked up a similar blank the other day at Rockler, and may have to try this. Thanks for the idea. :)

Bob
Is going to be an ongoing thing Bob. I like this red one but the yellow and blue one is really out of site.

It is not hard to do. Start with darker colors and go toward the lighter one. I used Transtint in alcohol. I would advise using color wheel before putting colors over others. They will change quite a bit (yellow over blue makes green).

Nice job on the dye. I like the green one best but this is nice, too!

Bob, this is the clear favorite of the three for me on this grouping. Great color and form, and the beaded rim is perfectly done.

Bob, all of the colored fiddleback pieces you posted are just incredible. But this red bowl has such an intense color that I think it's my favorite. I would have a hard time making myself add color to such a beautifully figured piece of wood but what you done has certainly enhanced the beauty of the wood.

Very well done Bob. I keep going back and forth between all these. For form, this is my favorite but I don't find myself lost in the color like I do the green!

Very well done Bob. The dye job is great, really pulls out the figure and the beading work is really well done.
