Yesterday was the 3rd annual woodworking expo at the local Woodcraft. As part of the expo they have a woodworking contest with 4 categories: woodturning, wood carving, furniture, and other. I entered 4 pieces in the woodturning category and the attached piece won 1st place - a new Rikon 70-050vs mini lathe worth about $350. The winning entry is a spalted/quilted/curly Maple hollow form with an Ebony collar (in these photos it has a Desert Ironwood collar, it was later replaced with one turned from ebony). The second photo is a quick cell phone photo from my shop that better shows the spalt and quilt/curl on the top.

Congratulations!!! I too won the WC contest here in Tucson, but our 1st prize was no where near as cool. I just got some clamps and other odds & ends. A very deserved award for your efforts. That is a georgous HF.

This was the 3rd annual event. 1st year I took 3rd place, a close quarters angle drill (~$60). Last year I took 2nd, a Supernova2 with insert (~$165). This year i took 1st and got the mini lathe. Is it too early to start planning for next year?

Congrats on the lathe! I'd have given that ironwood piece top prize... Then I'd have given you second for the piece you won with. Shows you what I know, huh?

That IS a gloat! I was 1/2 kidding, but thought that since it was a contest held at WC, it would have been a WC piece of wood...

I don't buy much wood there these days. Come to think of it the Ebony I used for the collar was bought there, as was the Ebony used in the pedestal & the finial on my Sissoo entry.

Thanks all, Here are my 2nd and 3rd place entries for the past 2 years. The hollow form is bug eaten and spalted Palo Verde and won 2nd place last year. It doesn't have a flat bottom so it must sit inside the matching ring stand. The 3 piece nested set is Eucalyptus Burl that was locally harvested. The cracks are filled with coffee grounds. It took 3rd place 2 years ago.
