I bought a rusted up, throw away, D-8 1888 - 1897 panel saw today for its good apple handle and nice dated medallion. Disstonian Institute says the medallion should be 13/16 inch but the medallion from this saw measures a full 7/8 inch. Is it common for them to be oversize?

Hi Larry,

I have little knowledge of Disstons, but from looking at the website there are two sizes of medallions displayed. One is the 13/16ths and it states that these are found on backsaws and panel saws as well as no.16 full sized saws.

There is also a 1inch medallion fitted to full sized hand saws and so I suspect that on a D8, the medallion should be 1".

This may not be a lot of help if yours is 7/8 ths.

You may just have an oddball.
