Not sure what this wood is but it was a knobby, convoluted lump off the side of a tree that someone gave me. Not really a burl and very hard. Wings got thinner than anticipated while smoothing out tool marks. About 1/16-1/8" at the rim thickening to a bit over 1/4" at the base. Measures about 9x3" overall and finished with danish oil and beall buff. Definitely won't hold soup. C+C always appreciated.

Wow Bob!! Great shape and finish!! Glad it held together for ya! That's a heck of a size for something so aerated!

Very cool Bob. I love pieces like this that have all the rises and falls around the natural edges.

Very nice! Wouldn't have wanted to be in the line of fire of that one during the hollowing - looks like the lobe on the left in pic three was not very securely attached.

Very pretty. It looks like a fall leaf in a way. Job extremely well done on turning and finish.

Great piece Bob. 2 thumbs up from me. Sugar Maple would also be my guess as to the wood.

Bob,
I second the "looks like Maple." What a great job turning such a tough piece. Great shape/form and the sides look very consistent to me on thickness. Very Well Done!

That is one tough turning to pull off. Just cutting through those hard, cracked areas had to be something else. The final piece really looks worth all those tense cuts. Thanks for sharing a beautiful turning.

Thanks for all the comments. Despite turning a lot of air, it was surprisingly solid. The wood is really hard and I never felt like it was at much risk of coming apart. I brought it to our turning club this past week and consensus there was also maple or hickory.

Wow - that is pretty cool! Great looking wood (another vote for maple) and I really like the natural edge!
