Sycamore Bowl

I had a small sycamore blank that was a little spalted and very light weight. I have been a flatlander too long and considered it crap wood. It turned like butter, it was the quickest turning that I have done so far. I usually turn dry, heavy stuff. This is # 23 in couple of hours, very quick for me. I thought that the blank was light weight! This is like a feather, really I like a heavier feel. 5 3/4" dia. x 2 3/4" tall

Sycamore is fun to turn! You have a cool bowl there Deane, hard form to pull off! Drop that foot a bit and you'll hit a homer!

This has more color than a lot of sycamore. Wish I could see the bottom in the second picture, looks interesting.

Deane, your work is really coming along! This is a very nice bowl, and the sycamore does have some good color. The foot may be a little tall for some, but it is within reason and gives the bowl a nice lift.

If you can find some spalted and/or ambrosia sycamore, it is REALLY nice! It does go from spalted to rotten pretty quickly, though.

You are doing good Deane. I agree that the foot might look better shorter or the bowl could be done without a foot which would be my preference. What is your finish? I have been using Grape Seed Oil on some Sycamore recently for a utility using finish and about 2 heavy wipe on, soak, wipe off seem to work well and easy.

Great curve on a nice looking bowl! Agree with the others on the foot, but I'm known to have some serious foot issues!
