This is a platter for a Birthday present this weekend. Myself, along with 4 other family members celibrate our birthdays this weekend. This is for my BIL's father. It's Claro Walnut & Curly Maple. I took pictures of the build but I don't have time to post the how to this weekend. When I get back on Tuesday, I'll give you all a step by step of building the segmented ring and the build. This should be an easy turning for those of you that want to dip your toes into the segmenting world. (Be careful, the vortex is strong here at the deep end.) For now though, please enjoy.

First - Happy Birthday! :D
That is a great platter, and I'm sure it will be appreciated. What other woods have you got going on in between the maple?
I'm looking forward to the tutorial. :)

Thanks Brian, That's also Walnut. They are pieces left from another project I'm working on. A segmented turning with around 20,000 pieces. More on that later though.:D
This one has 145 pieces.

Looking forward to the "how-to", Bill. Just bought my first book on segmented turning and anxious to get my feet wet on something less than 200 pieces.
Great looking piece. Your talents are beyond my aspirations.

Bill,
I really like the combination of the woods on this piece. A very nice bowl indeed. I have a nice sized Claro Blank I might just add a feature ring of Segmented to. I too, will be waiting for your tutorial.....

Thanks so, much everyone. Yes you read that correct. I must be insane. So far I'm around 1000 pieces into it. A long way to go for sure. The feature ring itself will have 11000 pieces give or take a few hundred. There's a feature ring contest going on so I had to one up Monsoon, my previous biggest project. I'm out of town right now but I'll post a sneak peek soon. Cut...glue....cut....glue.. or is that glue...cut....glue...cut. I don't remember.

Nicely done, Bill! I love how the curl radiates out from the center.

Very pretty platter Bill. I am sure he will love it! Not sure if I am looking forward to this tutorial or not though. Something simple might be too tempting to try and I might ending up cutting up my flat stock! Then again, I might get to use it.:)

LOL I can tell you, if you have any long, thin scraps, you're in trouble. Segmenting is a greased vortex. The 2nd thing I ever put on a lathe was a segmented turning and look what happened to me.
