My big hackberry chunks were starting to crack even with Anchorseal, so I decided to start digging in. This blank was well over 100 pounds roughed out with my chainsaw, didn't quite clear the ways so I turned it outboard the whole time. It was kinda stressful and tiring having that large of an object whirring around but I eventually got used to it. I put my old "big bowl" inside it along with a soda can for reference, but the can made it look smaller than it does in person for whatever reason. It also sort of looks like I left the bottom twice as thick, but trust me that it isn't. You pretty much have to do this every time you get a bigger lathe, right?

That'll hold a lot of popcorn! A fine looking bowl.

That is going to be really nice once it gets finished! I haven't turn anything quite that large yet... but I am looking forward to it!

Well done. How did you hold that 100# chunk outboard? I have done some 20" dia rough pieces, but always between centers since I do not have a large faceplate and would not trust that on a 3 1/2" faceplate or else the screws would need to be so big dia and long that a lot of bottom would be lost.

Frankly, I just used the stock plate and 6 2.5" high quality sheet metal screws. I always get the mounting surface pretty close to dead flat with a block plane. I yanked on it left to right, didn't show any inclination toward movement. Nor did it during the turning process. I do plan on ordering a 4 or 6 inch plate as soon as I decide on which of the many available brands I want.

I've heard the hackberry trees this size aren't super common anymore, so I guess I was lucky to find such a large piece that was completely clear. Too bad about that whole year+ wait on drying. Oh well.

Now that's what I'm talking about! Nice bowl. And yes, you [I]have[I] to do it for no other reason than you can! After all, that's one of the reasons you bought a big lathe, right?
