View Full Version : My first BLM Burlcap

I had this BLM burl cap sitting in my workshop for about six months as I was afraid to mess it up. I was able to keep most of the bark. It's 1/8 inch thick, 6 1/2 inches wide and about 3 inches tall. One coat of WOP so far.

C & C welcome!

Thanks, John. I had hesitated to work on this because I really didn't feel that my skills were sharp enough to complete this turning to my satisfaction. For some reason, I'm challanged to go thin on just about everything a la Scott Hackler. And....i'd never done a natural edge turning before so I was afraid I wouldn't know how to deal with the bark. Takes me a while to learn some things but after I do, I can't be stopped! I ordered two more burl caps today!

That's a beautiful piece, Harvey. The form is nice and displays the figure without detracting from it.

Harvey, that looks very nice! I love the orientation of the burl and the natural edge....and of course it looks lost about right on the thickness too! :)

Excellent results except with the few bits of missing bark, because it's all or none for me. You'll like the spikey rim just as well without the bark.

That's got a really nice WOW factor for me...and to get the walls to 1/8" is way cool too.

It is really nice, almost floral. On a thin pedestal that would definitely be a flower. Not a suggestion mind you. That's too pretty to risk sitting atop something thin.

Very nice Harvey! As far as the missing bark goes, I think bald looks good. Must be a personal thing!;):)

Very nice, you definitely did a wonderful job with this blank. Mother Nature did her part as well.

Excellent results except with the few bits of missing bark, because it's all or none for me. You'll like the spikey rim just as well without the bark.Harvey, on most BLM, it is difficult to retain the full bark edge. They sap is up when they are harvested in most cases. I usually remove the remaining bark and tint the bare spike edge with some dye - a mix of black and brown, with highlights of both in spots. Seems to look as nice as the bark, and much more consistent.

Just a thought.
