This is my first turning out of Olive and it sure is different. Even though the wood was rough turned and dried prior to finish turning, it warped a lot anyway. Could just have been from the release of internal stresses but seeing as this was my first time ever turning Olive, it could just be the nature of the wood.

Olive, 7” diameter x 3 3/8” high by 1/16” thick, sanded to 400 grit and has 5 coats of wipe-on poly.

Ah Steve, what a beauty! Is that Olive like the little black olives come from or Russian Olive? Looks like Russian Olive. Whatever it is, it's just beautiful especially with one of your forms and incredible finish.

Curt - I have no idea what kind of Olive it is. Marc Himes gave it to me a while back on one of his shop visits. I'll have to ask him the next time I see him!

Very nice Steve, I'd guess Russian Olive as well. Sure is a beautiful piece of wood and you form and finish are first class as usual.

Great looking hollow form Steve! I too believe it appears to be Russian Olive.

Excellent result!! It does not appear like the olive I have seen, although it does seem similar to some of the Russian Olive Curt has posted. His work seems darker than this, but that could be finish or lighting.

Going for thin on this one - 1/16"!!!!!!

John - the last form I did was thicker than I normally turn and this time around I wanted something thinner. To say that this form is lightweight is an understatement! Feels like you are holding a couple of potato chips in your hand... kinda.

Very nice, like the way the grain wraps around the form. Did it smell good? Only olive I've turned was a pen blank, and it smelled wonderful.

Very pretty, Steve. I like the form and the grain really looks nice, too!

What, no finial? Very nice...You're getting in a groove on that form Steve.

I agree with others that this isn't the fruit olive.

That one would be nice to hold and get a feel for the weight at 1/16th............very nicely done...........simple form, but I am sure not so simple to get it like you have it...........just real nice work, Steve.

I really like this one, Buddy!

Nice wood form and finish!

Pretty wood and a nice form, as always. Hard for me to see any warp in the pictures, so I assume you kept removing it as it arose. Maybe that is why you were only left with 1/16" !

Looks like Olivewood from here. Love the stuff but it's not easy to come by for me. Steve you are going to like the way it takes a finish------it won't take much to be perfect.

Nice form Steve, wouldn't know olive from sassafras, but it sure looks purdy! And oh so thin...

Beautiful form, finish, and wood. Three out of three ain't bad!

Looks great to me Steve and I will agree with it being olive. I turned this vase (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?152180-No-22-%E2%80%93-OliveWood-Acorn-Vase-quot-Critique-Requested-quot&highlight=) back in Nov 2010 and it was Olive. To me they look very close in grain match. My photos are a little warmer(probably didn't have my white balance correct) which gives mine a redder tone but other then that I think they are the same wood.

BTW did you use a steady rest getting the walls that thin? I would be afraid of collapsing the wall with the rest. Even with a rest I bet it whistled a loud tune.

Well sir...that is fine! It is more likely to be COW since BOW is all but unattainable and all the rest are just plain OW. Think there is a chunk on the rack with Steve Carter's name on it and a few more after that!

COW, BOW or OW??? Whatever kind of olive it is, it's beautiful! I love the way the grain flows around the form which is, as usual, classic SS. The 1/16" thick walls must make this light as a feather.

Steve,
Very nice form and finish. You must have had enough stock after dying to reshape it, because I see no warpage on your finish Hollow Form. Thanks for sharing.

Gotta say the grain wrap makes it special. You can just follow it up and down as you go round. Nice job Steve. Always enjoy viewing your pieces. Thanks for sharing.

That's ok David...you're not supposed to know. To some it matters and to you it doesn't. Have a nice day!

It's a wonderful shape and the wood is magnificent. Since the shape is so much wider at the shoulder than at the base or top, it brings up a question about the wall thickness when you rough turn. I assume you make the widest part 10% or so wider than you plan the finished form but do you taper the thickness as you hollow toward the top and bottom due to the smaller diameter?

Faust - good question! Actually, I find that hollowing forms out so that they are of an even thickness is more important than the standard 10% rule. The whole idea behind the 10% rule is to allow you enough wood to turn when finishing but if the piece is of uneven thickness - it will crack on you! I think this piece was hollowed out to an even 3/8" thick, DNA bath and then allowed to dry. Worked out fine for me as I had originally planned on turning the piece thin anyway and didn't need that much extra inside the form to remove in the first place.

Nice one Steve and 1/16" thick seems just about right....for piercing! :)

Very nice looking HF . The only time I get something 1/16th" is by accident. Masterfully done.

I always enjoy seeing your southwestern forms Steve! At first I thought that the "neck" was a little understated but the more I looked at it the more I realized that a larger neck speaks more about the form of the piece and your smaller neck lets the wood do the talking instead of the form. I guess I just decided for myself if you have plain wood let the form speak...if you have nicely figured wood...let the grain do all the talking!

Very nice wood and form Steve. You did justice to a very pretty chunk of wood. I love the sell of olive wood as much as the beauty of it.

Fabulous piece of wood and you turned a fine form from it. Love the flow of the grain you got from that pith up orientation.

Very nice! I particularly like the shape and the way it flows so well with the figure. Doesn't look like WOP, it has more of a warm look to it which I favor.
