Here is a picture of me getting ready to cut the last piece of my large silver maple logs I got 3 years ago. The tree service delivered to the school at which I teach in the spring of the year. This wood is now very spalted but sound enough to turn. It is over 50" in dia horizontal with the ground. I'm 6" 4" to give you a reference in the picture. I will post some pictures of the bowls my students get out of this log in a few months.

Jack, I can see why you were interested in a bigger bar. Its a great thing that your students are going to utilize some of that wood.

Not sure where I would begin to cut with a log like that. Other than from the outside!

Great looking piece of maple. There should be some great bowls in there since there is some spalting. Looking foward to see more pics.

Jack, They look like the big tall stumps I have to go get one of these days, but it was -11 this morning and more of the same for tomorrow, but I can't wait to get it cut up like you are, but where is the snow???? Much to warm for wood cutting where you are!

Thanks everyone. I had already cut 3 rounds of this log before the picture and after the round yesterday I well get two more rounds. Each round turns into dozens of blanks in varying size. This is at the school of alternatives that I teach at in the spring semester each year. I only have one student that I taught in previous years so most of my students require a lot assistance turning bowls as of yet, but my one student that has been in my classes for 3 years is a turning machine. I will take a few pictures of his latest rough outs and a few of the bowls he has finished lately this weekend.

It might be worth finding someone with a portable bandsaw mill to come and process that log for you.
