I haven't done a hollow form for a while, so decided to do a small one tonight. I had a couple small african sumac logs buried under the shavings by the lathe, so I pulled out best of the two (the least checked) and mounted it between centers.
The logs have been sitting for a few months so they were fairly dry, and it cut very nice. The hollowing went especially easy, the inside surface was very smooth, at least until I decided to go back and thin up the shoulder a little.
Just cell phone pics, and the color's a little bland now, but I'll let it get a little suntan and it should redden up nicely. I'll try to remember to post more pics after it's colored up.
3 1/2" x 3 1/2" with just a coat of danish oil so far.
On the last pic, the "x" on the bottom is just some color in the pith and is something that seems to be pretty common for sumac, kinda reminds me of an x chromosome.
