From time to time, it is interesting to look at product being made throughout it's various steps. Thought you might enjoy this one. The finished bowl is 4 x 10. The sealer coat is gloss lacquer, then several coats of tung oil, and finally buffed and micro crystaline waxed.

Love the shape. The shape and the color make the piece feel light, almost slightly translucent.

Nice bowl Dan!!.

Seeing as that is cedar did you rough this one out or just turn it wet.

It doesn't get any better than red cedar. Nice wall thickness.

Fun to watch the transition from "is that turnable?" to "neat work" Dan.

That's pretty! I guess I'm wondering how the pith will react in a piece like this... Will you let us know if you have any troubles with it? That kind of cedar is really plentiful around here, and if the pith is relatively stable, I may have to try a form from a whole log section like this.

While not dry, this tree has been down 3+ years. Some products from it have caused problems but many have not. I live in a fairly high, dry, and cool climate. I certainly have had some things go ballistic and split big time. I posted this cedar bowl in November, 2010, my wife claimed it and it still looks just like it did when this photo was taken. Of course, the pith was almost naturally already gone. So, David, I would give it a try.

Very nice colors and a great design. Tell me more about the extra chuck thingy you have in the 6th pic. Is that screwed to the work piece or just being used as a dead center? Looks neat. I haven't thought of something like that. Let me know.

It is Jerry's chuck design. You basically drive it into the wood with 4-5 wraps with a mallet. They work quite well. His instructions can be found:
