I thought some might find this amusing. Its not uncommon to find nails etc. in urban timber, I hit several nails and some wire in the last sections of a large log a couple of days ago. I was feeding my woodstove and found this one from a couple of years back. I remember hitting the mounting nail with my chainsaw and then thought I was safely missing the nail to get a bowl blank. Little did I know the insulator was hiding so close to the edge.

There's a possibility that you've a true antique. Telegraph wires were sometimes run on living trees back in the late 19th century to avoid issues with poles rotting/weathering (this was before pressure-treated wood (obviously) and creosote (less obvious)).

I've run into a lot of things cutting ahead of the lathe. Nail, screws, wire, bullets and a railroad spike once but never anything as interesting as that. Must be an art piece now!

Hayes, You could probably sell that as is. Just say it makes a statement about inevitable takeover of the planet by nature or something and put a big price tag on it. Just realized that on a thread of mine a few weeks back you asked about how the fishing was. Just two days before New Years went out with my son who was in from college and we did extremely well. Tried to attach a photo but couldn't

I got one a those a couple years back...not nearly as picturesque though. The black locust it came out of was evidently part of a fence row years ago. It was buried so far in, it couldn't be seen til half the tree came down in a storm and someone cut into it with a chainsaw. I still have that thing somewhere...
