You need to get together with Mark Hubl. I see a "collaborative" sculpture potential here....

Michelle, I pride myself on being the "Master of the Burn Barrell Resurrection", but that is way above my pay grade. With all those pieces going everywhere I am thankful you were not hurt.

Dorothy told me you had a "blow up" and the main thing is you didn't get hurt. I'm guessing by the photo that you were hollowing after the spiraling so you were out in a safe area.

That's too bad! I can think of worse ways to waste a couple days, but it still stings when it happens.

Now THAT is a catch! Can't change the past. Time to start a new one. :)

You can glue that up...Oh heck yeah!!
I had a nice olivewood bowl, albeit small that looked great and then "Smacko"!! 2 out of 3 pieces in the Trend and it had a happy life in the fireplace...but I really liked it!! I feel for you...all that effort and nuthin'!

Sorry for your loss. In looking at the pics I wonder if you got some flex from the tool bit protruding so far? Perhaps if it were shortened up a lot, flex from the bit would be eliminated? Hindsight being what it is and all... looking forward to seeing the next one in complete form.

Well, when you do it, you do it well. Didn't leave one spiral intact. It looked like it was going to be another great piece. I feel you pain, but you have to "mount back up on the lathe" and don't let it defeat you. LOL.

Machelle,
Sorry for your loss. That was going to be a really nice piece. Now for my question. How do you cut the spiral grooves? I want to cut sprials......

My condolences Michele! That would have/must have been spectacular!;) It won't hurt as much in a few days. Living on the edge has its risks and rewards! Hope its all rewards on the next one!:)

Michelle, next time try wrapping the form with masking tape, and for an even more secure binding use filament shipping tape over the masking tape. This will eliminate most of the potential chattering/vibrations that can lead to explosions of fluted work, and you don't need to ask how I learned this lesson!

Hope you haven't thrown that away! I am certain that you will make something cool out of it!

That's a real shame Michelle, I feel your pain -- but "GOSH DARN DANG NAB IT!", that's a little harsh for a little old lady.

That's a bummer Michelle. I fell your pain. I too have learned this lesson the hard way.

For everyone else let me just say... once you carve openings in something you can't go back and turn it any more. If nothing else, the stress released will cause the wood to move and the piece will no longer be round and therefore more prone to catches. It's also a heck of a lot weaker. If you're going to cut something up you have to finish the turning first. They're may be those who disagree with me, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Yep, I would believe that..ever seen Jeff Salter's video? He turns after cutting in the spiral..this wood was spalted birch..it was too spalted..too weak. My fault entirely. I should have used more solid wood. But it would have been so pretty if i had pulled it off!

Sorry to see that one head for the fire pile Michelle, but on the other hand, you make some pretty interesting firewood!

Hey Michelle, sorry to see this piece blow out on you. Thank you for posting about it though. Something about seeing someone at your level having this happen makes it easier for all of us to experiment knowing that the envelope or luck is being pushed at times.
Look forward to the redieux.
