View Full Version : Needs A Bit More Work

I have a few tools for riving wood. A couple of axes, a fro and various hatchets.

I have often thought of how useful it would be to have a mini-fro.

So I dug through a box of metal I picked up from a yard sale that had some planer/joiner blades.

Not sure what it came from, but I knew it had a beveled edge.

I thought I could drill a hole in this , but it kind of just laughed at the center punch. After restoring the tip on the center punch my thought was to see if the blade could be held in a pinching handle.

Well, it works, but it isn't the best set up.

Using this showed me why a fro or an axe is beveled on both sides. The edge makes the cut, but the blade behind the bevel does the splitting. Most of the pieces split had a shaving on the flat side of the blade between the blade and the actual split in the work piece.

Next try will be to remove a bit of the bevel and see if it can be made into a tanged blade. Then it will be given a back bevel.

More as it happens.
