Some interesting stuff shows up at that google link. Unfortunately, they require you to sign in with a google email address, presumably so they can track it. Great, so my library can refuse to report the books I read, but now google's going to let all the advertisers know about them. I bet that probably most of you don't mind, so have at it; but for those who do, you now know.

Here's a technique that you might find useful:

Like my cell phone number, I'm pretty particular about who I give my "real" email address to. I have set up a couple of anonymous emails that I use specifically for activities that are likely to generate large amounts of spam (such as the "free" Google e-books). If the junk gets to be overwhelming or too much of a pain in the neck, I simply delete that address and get a new one. It keeps my regular email address pretty much advertising and spam-free. (Earthlink, among others, offers free anonymous emails with a regular paid email account.)

Thanks, James. I have both a google and earthlink emails, and neither of them is a source of spam, the odd spam now and then. Maybe I will set up another google email and use that. BTW, spam isn't the problem, it's the tracking that bothers me, a lot. I just don't want some huge American corporation routinely storing everything I do online. I've noticed it's already affected my online activity. I've started trying to minimalize all online activity. Can't even watch Youtube anonymously.

Project Gutenberg is a great expanding resource for out of copyright books of all types, a more thorough search would doubtless find others of interest.

As regards tracking of internet activity Duck Duck Go doesn't keep any records of your activity, or so they say......
