I had a client ask for a large bowl with a wave that she could use. Not my usual motive, but we always try to please the client.

It's about 14" with a little flatter base then I prefer, and I think she understands she can only serve bread and such out of it. She seemed pleased.

14" Maple & Dye. Finished with Tung Oil on exterior and Walnut Oil on interior.

C&C welcome

Really nice. Very classy. It has that "how did you do that" factor. Great wood, nice contrast, I could go on...

Very nice, lovely wood, not always a fan of ornamentation, but like the wave too.

Very nice looking bowl. Maple has a great grain pattern in it. And the want contrasts nicely with it. Excellent execution on the wave.

John, I think this may be one of the nicer ones you have done in this style! The figure showing through on the dye really adds a lot. Excellent work!! What dye color did you use?

Very cool John. I was wondering to myself the other day if your technique (not really sure how you do it) is constrained at all by a particular size...I guess I got my answer! Another beautiful wave bowl!

Beautiful bowl, John, as usual! Any chance we could get you to post a pic of the inside?

I really like your waves. This is great.

Please DON'T share how you do this except maybe in your will. You've got something truly unique and "signature". I'd hate to see it copied all over.

That is a really big wave!! The bandsaw work must have been a little scary! Anyone would be pleased with that John!

Thanks everyone.

JK: I mix my own colors using Transtint dyes. This one is primarily Mission Brown, with a few drops of yellow to lean the tint towards the tones of the Maple. For the brown tones I usually start with Mission Brown or Cordovan and go from there.

Roger C: Unfortunately I didn't take a photo of the inside before I sent it off.

Scott Lux: I appreciate your comment, and it is something I struggled with. The woodturning community is a very sharing community and there was a lot of pressure for me to show my techniques. After much thought and discussion with some top turners I did decide to make myself available for demos and show the technique. Two turners have copied it without my input, so I figure it's best to go ahead and share it and get the credit for it. I do have a few more variations of the theme that I'm working on, so I think I can stay ahead of those who try to copy.

John, As always your work is beautiful. This one has some really great looking wood. I think you should be flattered that it will be used. Nothing wrong with that in my mind, it will become a treasured heirloom. Beauty and function make it all the more special!
