Well, after 2-1/2 months, the shipment arrived.

The delay was tied to Canada Customs and confusion. The Broker which I hired got a release on Dec 7 but Canada Customs did not process it.. Whatever.

I bought these as useable collectors from Japan Woodworker.. They where very good to deal with and when the package was lost where very helpful.

They are paring chisels with Ebony handles .. very nice tools .. I am impressed. They are also very sharp right out of the box, I had heard that Japanese Chisels can be sometimes delivered dull, needing a full edge but these are actually amazingly sharp..

These where made by Tasai and are on the expensive side of the ledger, I don't plan on adding any more paring chisels but perhaps in the future will some other offerings..

Really impressed with the size of them.. they are big but light weight.. Very pretty .. if you can call a chisel pretty..

I would say they are beautiful.

I don't always find Japanese chisels as attractive as my favorite western ones, just a personal aesthetic, I suppose. But I do think these are gorgeous. I'm curious about the long handle/short blade style of paring chisel - are the handles angled enough that you could pare something in the middle of a board without the handle interfering?

Those are a really work of art Rick. I understand why you were so worried when they didn't show up.

Can I ask if, after all the delay, you were charged any duty bringing them into Canada? Being of Japanese origin, I don't think they fall under NAFTA. I've brought some stuff in from JWW but it was in the $200 range (and its been a while so I can't even recall if they charged me or not).

Gorgeous and elegant! They remind me of the chisels Jim Kingshott uses in his videos and books.

Will you be able to bring yourself to putting them to the stones? :)

Hi Rick

Beautiful chisels! I wish you much pleasure in using them.

Hi Joshua

My Kiyohisa slicks have angled handles ...

Well, after 2-1/2 months, the shipment arrived.

My wait was 3 years! But also worth it. Great balance and control from blades that get very sharp and hold an edge well ...

These are the same as the picture Derek posted, they will sit flat .. The picture doesn't really show that ..

Turns out if you ship by USPS to Canada, if the order is over $1600.00 it automatically gets stopped by Customs.. So there was duty.. $1600 is the magic number..

Below $1600 its a crap shoot, you may or may not have to pay duty and HST.

They are so sharp that all I may do it hone them a touch.. I have Blue Spruce and other chisels, they never showed up this sharp... I dont think they needed to be sharpened prior to delivery, just interesting.

I'm glad to hear these turned up.

I was reading the earlier posting with some dismay.
It seems there's no end to the bureaucratic interference at our border.
