I've been lurking for the last 9 months. I have moved to South Texas and my house doesn't have a shop (another story). I took my old hobby lathe up to the shop where I work and can now turn on off hours.
I have started back with a little Longleaf Pine. It is pretty stuff for pine, and a loth harder than southern pine. This was from a 100+ year old reclaimed board. It ended up 9" dia. by 1 1/2" deep. I have a 12"x12" piece left that I will try turning outboard. Back in the saddle again. It is nicer than the photo for a change.

Good that you are back. Really like the grain pater on the out side of the bowl.

Well, the sabbatical certainly did not take away from your turning skills!! That is a very nice bowl, and the color of the pine is exceptional.

Good job on the platter, and glad that you've found a way to get back in the saddle.

Glad to see you posting again and staying with it. That is a nice save of the old lumber. You should find a lot of Mesquite in that area to give you some more wood to play with. Did you use a glue block to keep all the thickness possible for the bowl or was that a true 2" board to start with?

I used a glue block. It was a little shy of 2".

Sweet piece Deane. I bet the shop smelled great after you finished turning.

Deane - great looking bowl! I like the low profile and that tight grain and color is amazing! Glad you found a way to get to turning! Hope you are able to set up a shop sometime soon!

I agree with Josh. Nice form and wood on that platter.

Pine gets pretty short shrift among us turners. I do have to say I've been eyeing the pines around my house...
