I recall that in my childhood (1950's) I associated the word "devilfish" with some relatively common sort of food, but I don't remember what it was. It wasn't a reference to an alcholic drink since my parents didn't drink. I think it might have been a sandwich spread or salad or some variation of a (non-alcoholic) "shirmp cocktail". I'm not sure that it actually contained the fish called "devil fish". I'm not even sure it contained fish at all.

Anyone from that era remember food described as "devilfish"?

I heard of catfish (bullheads) called that growing up in Minnesota.

There is a sandwich spread that I often had when I was younger that was called Deviled Ham....made by Underwood.
