I had a large piece of spalted maple crotch so I thought I'd see how big of a blank the Delta would handle.
I had to trim it on the bandsaw so it would just fit and used a 5/8 bowl gouge and a home made easy rougher.
There were no problems with power or performance.
I power sanded then finished on the lathe with a mixture of denatured alcohol, shellac and BLO.
It measures 11 1/4 X 3 1/2.
I am not a fan of large bowls because they take up so much space and they don't seem to sell very well.

Just a cranky guy from Elk Mound trying to have fun.

Great looking bowl. Thanks for the progress pics as well, it's always cool to see how the blank started (at least for a newb like myself).

Jeff - you did good! Nice size bowl and the grain really stands out!

Yup, turned chunks of green wood, including nice heavy oak, that just barely cleared the ways on a 46-460 many times. The motor struggles a bit with heavy cuts during initial roughing when the chunk is heavy, but it gets 'er done.

Nice work, Jeff, and your conclusions match mine. The Delta will take all you can throw at it. The largest I did on mine was a 12" cherry bowl with no problems.

Very nice form on the bowl, and great wood!

I have done the 12 bowls and cored them with the Mcnaughten standard size knives, getting more bowls out of the blank. As I remember the blank was about 7" thick. That lathe will take about anything for sure.

Nice bowl. I agree about selling the large ones. My wife likes them but she does't pay much for them. Looks like you had a lot of tearout. We you able to turn that away or did you have to sand it away?

Nice looking bowl. The Delta can handle it all. Mine has survived everything for me so far including burning in my shop fire. It's been torn down cleanned and it still works like new. I like the rim on your bowl. Nice touch.

Jeff,
Great rim on the bowl. Kind of sounds like a larger lathe may be in the future if you keep turning out the good stuff.

Great job! (From a fellow 46-460'er . . .)

Yea, my Delta has handled every pen blank I've thrown at it without any problems ;)
