I bought a log of maple from a local tree trimmer. It had some burls all the way around it, it also had spalting and ambrosia streaks. I roughed a bowl from one side and a hollow form from the other. This is the morning after the DNA soak. It is about 16" wide and about 6" thick. Comments are welcome. Russell

Cool! That's gonna be a great bowl when you finish turn it! Be sure to bag it good so it doesn't crack up on you. Beautiful grain that is, and I like the bark left on it too.

Man, that's pretty stuff! Too bad you don't have a coring setup. Looking forward to seeing them finished!

Wow that is going to be some bowl. Already reminds me of Van Gough, "Starry Night".

Wow, that's some gorgeous grain! Is that the 80 pounder you got? I hope that partial tenon holds up when you give it the finish spin!

Man, that's purdy. Hope all goes well when returning it. Looks like it has "Keller" potential...

Work In Progress. That is a spectacular piece of maple. What are you plans for finishing?

Allen - WIP = work in progress.... not to be confused with WOP (wipe on poly)!

Russell - that is going to be quite the bowl once finished! Looking forward to seeing it!

Thanks for the comments.
Nate- not 100% sure on the finish. May do lacquer. I am open for suggestions.

I was just turned on to Antique Oil by Tim Rinehart. It leaves a very flat, but nice finish and it won't darken the wood. Prior to AO, I used deft on Maple because it didn't darken much.

Great looking piece of wood Nate. Should make an amazing bowl. With enough coats of AO, you can build up a pretty decent gloss. Some 0000 steel wool will knock it back if you think you have gone too far.
