These pictures are of craftsman made expansive bit storage.

This box uses a tongue and groove type lid. The rest of the construction is butt joints put together with small brads. Bottom nailed on.

This box uses tongue and groove construction for all joints. The bottom holders apparently was bored with a Forstner bit, cut in half, and put together in four pieces. There may have been a separation plate at the end. Bottom glued on.

This bouses tongue and groove construction for all joints. The center support is a solid block with a groove down the top. The lid is hinged. Bottom nailed on.

This box was made by cuttin a board into the main body and lid. The main body was then hollowed out to fit the expansive bit and one cutter, (the other cutter was probably added later). The lid was cut at an angle and the fixed end attached with brads. The pivot end is a simple wood screw with washer.

This box was made from two pieces of wood. It looks like the end for the cutter head was bored with a Forstner and then the rest of the lid area was cleaned out with a router. The rest of the hollow for the expansive bit and extra cutters was done with chisels. The lid was then fitted using a sliding dovetail.

Thanks for the lesson in bit storage, Eric. :)

I particularly like the ingenuity on the second set; through forstner then rip in half. These cases will certainly protect the bits better than the "plastic bag" later expansion bits were sold in.

Jim, the second set is unusual in that it can hold two expansive bits. For those that don't know, just like the Russell Jennings / Irwin augers being suited for different hardnesses of wood, expansive bits also come with different threads.
The two channels could also be made with a regular auger bit with a separate end plate.
