Here is the other last turning from 2011. It is a coffee mug kit and glued up scraps of walnut and cherry I had laying around. It is finished with GF Woodturners Finish. Took it over to show my sister and brother who was up visiting. After I showed them I started to pack my stuff back up and couldn't find the mug. Didn't say anything but about a 1/2 hr later here come my brother with it. He said he just couldn't do it. I said do what. He said I had it stashed in my suitcase. So guess what he is going to get for his birthday.

Nice looking mug Bernie. I can see why your brother wanted it. Did you glue up scraps to make a block? If you continue to make these, you will need to try the staved method. It takes a lot less wood. Nice job.

Thanks Greg. I will be doing some stave work but just wanted something quick. I have a bunch of cut off lumber from a guy here in town that does cabinets, stairs, etc. He orders in wood and gives me the cuttoff's. I think I got about 40 pieces of walnut & cherry from 12" to 28" long by 6" wide. So have a lot of practice wood.

Bernie,

Could you take a moment to tell us how you assembled the staves? Id love to hear the math and wood thickness....how you cut the staves, how you glued them up.

Thanks, Jason

Hey Bernie, now . . . just how did you manage to do two "last turnings in 2011"?

Thanks again.

Jason I am going to let Greg talk about the staves. This one is just scrap 4" boards cut to 8" in length and glued. Once dried I turned it. I am going to start doing some staves once I get it figured out.

Peter I turned one at about 2 pm and the other started around 5 pm on 12/31/2011.:D

Bernie,
Nice Java Mug. I am sure your brother will love it. You better get busy making some more as your skills will surely be in demand when he shows it off............

Jason I am going to let Greg talk about the staves.

Attached are a couple of pictures of the staves that I cut for the coffee mugs. They are approximately 6.25 inches long, cut @ 22.5 degrees with a 2 degree taper. After I glue the 8 pieces together, I flatten the bottom and glue a round on the bottom and then turn a tenon on it, hollow the inside, shape the outside and then part off the lathe. This is the process I use and it works for me. There are other ways that work too. PM me with any questions.

Thanks Dan. He doesn't have a clue. He whined about how much he really would like to have one. I told him a $75 bill would get him one real quick. He just laughed.

Nice lookin' mug Bernie ... And, if your brother has a "$75 bill" produced by a U.S. Mint, grab it, drop the mug and run! I'm fairly sure you'd be the only human in possession of such a bill!

Thanks for the link, too. I think I'll have to order one of the kits.

Great job on the mug. I have made a couple myself and I still don't have a coffee mug. :o

Just a heads up that Wal-Mart and Hobby Lobby sell travel mugs that are easily disassembled and have a similar liner to the $10 Woodcraft kits. Here is a link:

I get my liners from Hobby Lobby too. The link above takes you to a purple mug and it is selling for $4.99. The other colors are $3.99 - go figure!

Thanks again. Malcolm I have read you article and am interested in giving it a try.

Greg I had a friend of mine said he got his mugs from Hobby Lobby but had problems with them after awhile with leaky gaskets. Have you had any problems?

No reported problems with the gaskets. I have received complaints about the top leaking, but on further investigation, I found people were complaining about the slider top leaking and that thing isn't designed to seal to top perfectly

Bernie,
How do you like the General Woodturners Finish? It is made in my backyard so I figured I should use it :)
