Here is one of the last turnings for 2011. It is Colorado Blue Spruce. It was a large Blue Spruce that blew over in a high wind storm next door. I asked him if I could have a couple of pieces of it. I cut the trunk in half and it sat in my utility shed for 3 yrs. So decided to see what would come of it as the piece was pretty small. It is 5 3/4" across and 4" high. Finished with GF Woodturners finish. This wood is so light I cannot believe it. It weighs 2.8 oz. My wife loves it.

Very nice Bernie - interesting variation of a lidded box. Did it cut as cleanly as it appears?

Thanks. Yes Dan it did cut surprisingly clean. I was concerned about it but not a problem. It was bone dry.

Spruce was used in air craft construction due to wt to strength ratio. Pretty.

Bernie, that is an interesting piece! Never turned spruce, but I have used it in flatwork. I bet it does turn well.

Thanks again. John I thought maybe it might turn like pine does but I would surprised at how smoothly it did turn. I started sanding on it at 150 grit.

Bernie, if blue spruce is anything like the Engelman spruce around here you must have had all your ducks in a row to get such a good cut on it.

I don't know if it is the same or not Hayes. It is pretty common here and eastern Colorado especially in the foothills. I still can't believe for it's size how light it is. This one when it came down was over 60 ft tall and one of the biggest I had ever seen here on the plains.

Very nice. I like the form, the wood, and the little knob on top. And it's filled with M&M's! Mmmmmm M & M's. :D
