Here is another of my recent completions, this one is going to my brother. Walnut, 8" X 1 1/2". Wet sanded with a home brew blend of roughly equal parts tung oil, turpentine, and alkyd varnish. If you are curious about the finish, see the late Russ Fairfileds site: FSOriginal7 (http://www.woodturnerruss.com/FSOriginal7-2of2.html)

Thats cool, almost looks like heat waves raising the the bottom of the dish - nice job.

Dan, that is an exceptional piece of walnut!! And, the finish is perfect. I have used the "three-blend" finish on flatwork, but had not considered it for turnings - looks great! What varnish did you use? Pratt & Lambert 38 seems to be the preferred, but it is difficult to find in my area.

That can hold my M&M's anytime! Did you buff that after finish or let it sit?

That's a real beauty Dan. May have to give that finish a try at some point.

Very nice candy dish. You captured the feathering perfectly, and the finish really lets the grain pop.

Dan, your brother will be happy to get that one. Hope he puts quality dark chocolate in it.

Thanks for the encouragement.

John --- I did use Pratt and Lambert #38, had to order it from a Mom and Pop paint store over in Idaho, as nobody carries it here either. Thought it was worth a try over the spar varnish alternative.

Jim --- not buffed yet, wiped on one extra coat after sanding, and may do one more, though probably doesn't need it. The pores were not completely filled in the sanding process, so don't know how it would look buffed, will avoid the white diamond if I do buff.

I broke out all of the cool stuff for presents, hope karma brings some more interesting raw material my way. At least I'll get to visit these on occasion. :) I'm keeping the smaller elm dish posted yesterday.

walnut always has the best figure. Super job keeping it as the main attraction.

Very very nice. Great feather, clean form, beautiful finish. That should be an heirloom piece for many many years to come!
