So, I decided that, having used a few nice new planes and having a feel for what a plane is supposed to do, I figured I might try my hand at tweaking one. Well, one led to another and so on and so forth.:o I ended up buying three planes to work with. Yeah, I know; You see four in the picture. I said I "bought" 3. I got the 5-1/4 on the end from fellow Cheesehead, John Dingman. The other two, a #4 Corsair and the #3 Stanley, were purchased from one of the guys who got me addicted to these cordless tools, Eugene Collison. The 4th one? According to Gene, it fell into the box he was packing the other two in!:D What a guy! Actually, I think he wanted me to see that even a "New-Age" Stanley, given the right touch, can produce great results. That one came with the sole worked over and the blade peaked. Even had some whisper thin Maple shavings packed with it! That little block does indeed do a nice job and will be a handy on-site user!:) Thanks Gene! (You too, John!) Although you guys are gonna' drive me into the poor house!

Speaking of poor house, the next two just about did! The little LN Rabbet Block plane was on sale at Woodcraft at the same price as FTJ, though the tax did up it over the free shipping/no tax. But, I brought it home. The #4 Bronze bomb was a deal! Got an email coupon from our local Woodcraft for numerous discounts for Sat./Sun. One of the discounts was 25% off any single item, excluding power tools and Leigh jigs. They just happened to have the #4 in house and Randy, the mgr. was happy to front me the discount today, so I wouldn't have to make a 90 mile round trip tomorrow! (I now work about 4 min. away from the store! ) I'm still walking around with this dumb lookin' grin on my face!:D :o Thanks for taking a peek, guys. Just remember: It was YOUR fault!!! All of you are bad, BAD people!!!:)

OK, you asked for it. I jumped out to the shop and took a couple quick shots. Low quality, but they're there. Now, I need to start planning for proper storage for these little gems!:)

Good question! I just got it a couple weeks ago and, except for cleaning up some joints on glue-up panels, I haven't used it much yet. It did do a nice job on the panel cleanup and I did try it on some scrap to try and imitate a tenon. Again, it looks like a winner. A real time-saver more than anything, thus far.:)

Yeah, took all of about 20 min. round trip! I knew what I wanted before I walked in there, so it was pretty quick. But FUN!:D

Nice collection, Spring. Have you figured out what's causing them to multiply like that? ;) Perhaps you should have them spayed or neutered before bringing them home! :D

I think you should maybe hide them from me when I visit Tuesday. My knuckles are only a short distance from dragging the ground now [from old age] and stuff like this would only accellerate the progression. Looking forward to, what hopefully will be, a new WW club in Packerland.

If you just need something to trim glue lines and get into corners, this LV plane is pretty nice. And as usual, a lot less $$ than LN. Not to take anything away from LN - I'm up to 7 already and wouldn't mind one of their chisel planes too.
There just always seems to be other LN's higher up on my priority list.

Thats what I was thinking too. All them there planes you got is too short for jointin'. :D

Seriously, Nice group John. Looks like you are headed down the cliff at about the same pace as me.

I'm proud to say I gave one of the first shoves toward that slippery slope. Like they said, a 7&8, you'll have arms like Arnold's in no time.

Congrat's Bro. Looks like another road trip.

Thanks gentlemen!:) It's been a blast! On my agenda for today is to mill up some wood for a LOML project then settle in with my plate glass (courtesy of that Tahiti-touring dude above!) and get all the irons flattened real nice and then give them all a quick once-over on the MKII. :) Then, as long as I have that nice plate out, start working over the soles on the "new" Stanley's and yes, even that Corsair! Should be interesting to see what that one turns out like!:) :D

FYI....The #4 is awesome, right out of the box! :D I can't hardly wait to see how she'll perform once the iron is tweaked!:) Just for grins and giggles, I set it really, REALLY shallow last night and took it to some lightly figured Maple. Not bad. Not bad at all and it doesn't even have the York pitch frog on it! I may not get one, either. Think I'll leave that for the 4-1/2!:)

Not entirely sure that long planes are on my priority list. That LV Jack does a surprisingly good job in lieau of a #7. Besides, I haven't totally given up on my corded friends and that Shelix on the DJ20 gives me some "pretty good" edges!:D

John,

I agree...I don't use my jointer or try plane that often...a smaller plane allows a slight "springing" to the boards used for a glue up. It is subtle, but the ends should make contact before the center allowing for just one clamp...although I use many...The LV Jack is perfect for that. Even with the Shelix...I would still hand plane before joining boards.

So Mark, do you use some type of guide for jointing (like that magnetic thing LV has) or do you just eyeball/feel it out? Before answering that, remember that unlike yourself, I'm still tumbling down that slope and the slide isn't quite as controlled as I'd like!:D  :)

Didn't say you *had* to use them but what group is complete without a couple jointers??????? :D :D All them short little guys need somebody to look up to you know. :D

Ahhhh...Gotchya'! May have to see if I can find a deal on a Bedrock Stanley or two, (7 and/or 8) so that I can tweak it/them for something like that. Having said that, at this point in the "game", I definitely DO like nice stuff to look at, but they *have* to be users at the same time, as I simply can't afford just "decorations". Maybe one of these years! It'd be nice to have a complete series of something, just to have it, even if the use is limited. Oh nuts...There I go dreamin' again! :)

John,

I agree with Mark, and don't use my longer planes that much right now. You might pick up a Bailey #7 and keep it for a year to see how much you use to, before investing in a BedRock, or I know you'll go for the LN.

The scary part is, you're getting to know me too well, as I imagine you're probably right! Maybe I'll try to find a decent Bedrock right off the get-go and, if I don't use it too much, that will do. Period.:) I'm going to play with those Type 17's I got first and see if I like the regular frog at all in the first place. Just not sure if they're worth investing in a Hock or LN iron and better chipbreaker. That #3 sure seems like a handy little size to use on a bit smaller stuff. Just need to tweak and play with them a bit, I guess. Or, you just never know...I may decide that the LV Jack does nice enough for "all" my jointing needs or, as Mark suggests, use the smaller blocks to creat a tad bit of spring, in which case the 7 or 8 probably wouldn't do at all! If so, I might just continue filling in the LN "collection" from the other end (smaller smoothers and such).:D

Family looks pretty good. Keep us up tp date on what you are doing to store them. I am goung throught the same thing right now for my planes. The issue I have is that my collection is no where near done and I have to keep in mind expansion.

I'm rehabbing 10 planes total this weekend including a type3 Bedrock 607C that was a bit of a problem child. I'll post the story tomorrow when I'm done with it.

That pic is the group after being stripped and glass beaded. All the bodies and frogs are taped up and ready to spray in the pic. Everything is drying right now and I'm working on wood ...or...er...I should be working on the wood instead of web surfing. Back to the shop....:D :D

John,

Very nice collection. You've got some real beauties in there. The refurbing really can be enjoyable and satisfying, but those LNs look very nice no matter what.

Terry,

You wouldn't have a 4 1/2 in there you want to get rid of would you (couldn't tell from the pic if there might be one in there)?

Mike,

No 4 1/2's in this bunch. All 4's, 5's and 7's. I had a super nice 4 1/2 but Scott Coffelt ended up with it when I was in KC.

John,

If you start with the jointer and listen to the sound, you have a good edge. Now I take it to my bench and set it in the vise for edge planning. If the board is over 6' I will use my ECE try or jointer plane...24" long. If it is less, I may even use a smoother to remove the jointer texture and give it an extra pass or 2 at the mid zone...you could check it with a straight edge, or better yet...lay the 2 edges together, what you want is a 32nd to a 16 gap at the center fading to zero at the ends. There is no hassle in joining a pair like that...very little if any strong backs, etc.

So Mark, do you use some type of guide for jointing (like that magnetic thing LV has) or do you just eyeball/feel it out? Before answering that, remember that unlike yourself, I'm still tumbling down that slope and the slide isn't quite as controlled as I'd like!:D  :)

Terry,

Wow, you have gone wild! I been reading a bit lately about original japanning, and it looks like it's available from a company call Liberty Paint Company, as well as a guy named Bill Gustafson, and even several recipes for home brew japanning. It would be interesting to see how it compared to the engine paint you are using. Have you ever thought of giving it a try? There is lots of info in the Badger Pond archives, if you do a little searching. Just curious how it would compare.

John,

Not really. My auto refinishing experience tells me that modern coatings will out last and out perform the originals. Paint/coatings have come a long way in the last 100 years. I have continued to experiment with different paint and brands of paint. I have hit on something new that is quite incredible. I'll post some pics later today. I see no need for doing it the old fashioned way. I believe firmly that Stanley would not use the asphaltum formula with today's much improved coatings.

On rarebear's site he suggests that Stanley actually changed to a laquer based formula in the 40's. Check the pics I'll post later and see what you think of the finish.
