I got the blank at our club's Christmas party as a prize for the President's Challenge drawing. I decided to turn a thin bowl from it with a thought to doing a little piercing on it.
It's 7" x 1 1/2", the rim is 3/32" and the walls and bottom are 1/8" and it just has a coat of DO.
I considered giving it a very light wash of dye to really pop the curl, but decided against it. Still up in the air about wether to add some piercing or not.
I stopped at Rocklers on the way home from the meeting and picked up 2 more of the blanks, a 9" and an 11" which will both be turned like this, one but probably a tad thicker with each one, to make a set.
What are your thoughts or suggestions?

Really nice! Love the form and the wood is killer.

Do you use a bowl steady or some magic technique to turn thin like that? Seems I get a lot of chatter on the thin ones and end up with more sanding than I prefer. Actually, any sanding is more than I prefer. :)

I think it's great as is, would save the piercing for more plain wood.

Very nice work, Kathy, but I would not have been able to resist some dye on that wood - it is awesome!! I do agree on saving the piercing for plain wood - it would fight for attention with the highly figured maple.

Very nice form and some really pretty wood! I think I would have dyed it just to pop the curl but the wood will age with time and it will enhance the curl naturally. I also agree that any piercing would compete with the curl for attention. I look forward to seeing the additional two bowls in the set!

Kathy, I've turned a few of those blanks from Rockler and they do turn out nice. Yours turned out much nicer than mine ever did! I would just leave this as is....

Nice job on that one and another vote for not piercing.

Kathy,

The ancient adage applies here.... if it isn't broken, don't fix it! This is a beautiful bowl just as it is, I wouldn't change a thing.

Beautiful wood and great job turning it. I wonder where Rocklar gets all those wonderful maple blanks. They seem to have a never ending supply. I asked at the store, but they had no idea where it comes from. Thanks for sharing that wonderful piece.

Pretty little bowl, Kathy. I'll go against the grain, and vote for some simple, limited piercing on the rim. :)

That bowl is too purdy to mess it up Kathy! ;) As it darkens with age it will even get better than it is now!

Thanks for all the comments everyone!
I'm going to leave this one as is, I'll save the piercing for another project.

Jon, I don't usually use a bowl steady (although I have used my JN steady a couple times on bowls). For thin walled bowls, instead of starting in the center and turning out towards the rim, I start at the rim and work towards the center. I work my way down a little at a time leaving the bulk in the center for support, and once I finish a section I don't go back to it.
This is bowl #2 I was working on tonight. I leave the tailstock for support until it starts getting in the way, which is the point I was at when I took this pic. The finished areas are about 1/8".
